The Better Arguments Project: Promoting Civil Discourse

The Better Arguments Project, developed by the Aspen Institute, recently kicked off a series of workshops aimed at enhancing civil dialogue within communities. This initiative is part of William & Mary’s broader Democratic Initiative, which focuses on fostering civic engagement and the skills necessary for thriving in a diverse society. Open to the public and offered free of charge, participants can choose to attend any of the individual sessions.

The workshops are designed to be highly participatory, guided by moderators and centered around one of the core tenets of the project:
1. Take winning off the table; lead with a desire to understand and learn.
2. Prioritize relationships and listen actively.
3. Pay attention to context.
4. Embrace vulnerability.
5. Make room to transform.

The first workshop was led by Ginger Ambler, Senior Vice President for Student Affairs and Public Safety, and Roxanne O. Adler Hickey, Assistant Provost for Leadership & Academic Engagement, alongside several William & Mary students and alumni.

Hosted in an alumni’s home, the event welcomed around 40 participants who engaged with the concepts presented and interacted with one another. A key activity involved analyzing the statement, “Social Media is harmful.” Participants split into four groups based on their agreement with the statement—Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, and Strongly Disagree. Each group discussed their perspectives before appointing a spokesperson to share their views with the larger group.

Organizer Radhika Mauri noted, “I was struck by how quickly walls soften when people feel safe enough to speak honestly. I learned that disagreement isn’t the problem—disconnection is. When we stay present with one another, something deeply human opens up.”

Attendees reported gaining valuable insights on navigating difficult conversations and connecting with diverse individuals. The workshop series is encouraged for those looking to enhance their community engagement through constructive dialogue.

Upcoming workshop topics include:
– March 10 – Prioritize Relationships and Listen Passionately
– April 14 – Pay Attention to Context
– May 12 – Embrace Vulnerability
– June 9 – Make Room to Transform
